- Cherokee Defeat In the French and Indian War Col. Grant's force of whites, Chickasaws, and Catawbas defeated the Cherokee warriors near here, June, 1761 (Source: North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program)
- Cherokee Defeat In 1776 a force led by General Griffith Rutherford defeated the Cherokee at Wayah Gap, ten miles southwest (Source: North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program)
