So What is Linkpendium, Anyway?
Linkpendium is a 10,000,000+ resource directory to everything on the Web about families worldwide and genealogically-relevant information about U.S. states and counties. We cover both free and subscription sites, with a strong emphasis upon free resources provided by libraries, other government agencies, genealogical and historical societies, and individuals.
We are particularly proud of our unique indexes to online biographies.
How do I use Linkpendium?
- The Family Discoverer search engine at the top of this page covers 2,800,000 of the pages we index, and is the fastest way to explore genealogical and family history on the Internet.
- The city or county or family surname navigation tools in the right column let you jump directly to a Linkpendium page of resources. This is a faster way to reach the same pages you can find by following the links below.
- The Locality Directory below lets you follow links to resources for the U.S. states and counties that interest you.
- The Surname Directory below lets you follow links to resources for families worldwide that interest you. By following the links, you will see many possible variations on your family name.
- IMPORTANT: The locality and family surname pages include many resources that could not be included in the search engine.When you are trying to break down a genealogical brick wall, always use the locality and family surname pages in addition to the Family Discoverer. ;)

What's Happening at Linkpendium
August 09, 2021:
- We grew by about 2,258 links as Karen added new links and fixed or removed bad links.
- Karen and her robot army finished another pass through all ten million links.
July 01, 2021:
- Mostly a clean-up release fixing bad links: we grew by about 22 links.
June 10, 2021:
- We shrank by about 1,477 links as Karen deleted a bunch of bad links (and fixed other things).
April 14, 2021:
- We grew by about 11 links as Karen continued maintenance on the site.
March 24, 2021:
- We shrank by about 182 links as Karen removed links as she finished another pass checking all 10 million+ of the links..
March 07, 2021:
- We grew by about 283 links as Karen added new links and fixed or removed bad links.
- In particular, Karen just finished a full pass updating the links to all 3,000-odd USGenWeb sites getting all the links updated.
February 12, 2021:
- We shrank by about 95 links as Karen removed bad links and added new links.
January 23, 2021:
- We shrank by about 848 links as Karen removed 3,000+ bad links and added 2,000+ new links.
- And we fixed New Zealand being an American state.
January 06, 2021:
- We grew by about 729 links as Karen added new links and fixed or removed bad links.
- We also added New Zealand as America's 51st state. Our bad. We'll fix that.
December 14, 2020:
- We shrank by about 11 links as Karen and her robot army finished another pass through all 10 million links.

- We grew by about 2,532 links as Karen managed to recover a large site which had changed its URLs.
- This sort of thing is why we both have gray hair. :D
November 20, 2020:
- We shrank by about 2,693 links as Karen removed a large site which had changed its URLs.
- Hopefully most of those links will come back but, because there's no pattern to the changes, Karen will have to research every single link. :(
November 07, 2020:
- We grew by about 299 links as Karen added new links and fixed or removed bad links.
- And thanks to the the Oregon Secretary of State's Web Team, for letting us know about changes to their URLs.

- We shrank by about 191 links as Karen battled link rot.

- We grew by about 51 links, but Karen also fixed more than 20,000 bad links.

- We grew by about 354 links as Karen added new links and fixed or removed bad links.

- Karen's already out with a new release, fixing several hundred broken links and adding 1,138 more.
- Already, Karen tells me that she's found yet another trove for the next release.
- And we're still making technical upgrades to the site. We've transitioned from HTML 4.1 to HTML 5.

August 30, 2020:
- We shrank by about 142 links as Karen added new links and fixed or removed bad links.
- Karen and her robot army finished another pass through all ten million links -- our latest report indicates about 29,987 out of the 30,000 domains we cover are good.
- We've just finished extensive software improvements to Linkpendium, especially our mobile website.
- Please let us know if you see any bugs!

- We shrank by about 279 links as Karen added new links and fixed or removed bad links.
- But be very afraid. Last month Karen attended the Search Results Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP) and the Instititute of Genealogy & Historical Research (IGHR). No telling what new material she'll find after that. ;)
July 02, 2020:
- We grew by about 578 links as Karen added new links and fixed or removed bad links.
- Next update may be a bit slow coming because Karen will be virtually attending the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh.
June 16, 2020:
- We shrank by about 1,092 links as Karen fixed and removed bad links.
- And Karen has just finished yet another pass through all the links in her continuing battle against the evil "link rot".
